aGöğüs Cerrahisi ABD, Dokuz Eylül Üniversitesi Tıp Fakültesi, İZMİR Dysbarism and complications can occur while diving. These injuries can be classified into those resulting from the toxic effects of the inhaled gas, from the pressure changes in the water and gas mixture while diving, and from decompression sickness. Manifestations of diving injuries may not occur until 12 hours or more after a dive. Initial treatment, based on knowledge of the pathophysiology of barotrauma, decompression sickness, lung expansion injuries and ear barotrauma, may prevent severe and permanent sequel. Barotrauma, decompression sickness and air embolism are medical emergencies. The treatment for these pathologies includes administering 100% oxygen, increasing tissue perfusion with intravenous fluids, and rapid recompression. Keywords: Diving, barotrauma, bubble, recompressionTurkiye Klinikleri J Surg Med Sci 2007, 3(47):63-67
