bGöğüs Cerrahisi ABD, Ondokuz Mayıs Üniversitesi Tıp Fakültesi, SAMSUN Esophageal perforation is a surgical emergency associated with high morbidity and mortality. The most common cause of esophageal perforation is instrumentation. Although there is no consensus regarding the appropriate management of this life-threatening condition, perforation in a healthy esophagus should be treated by primary closure if encountered early. Nonoperative conservative treatment is appropriate when esophageal perforation is encountered late. The mortality rate of patients who were operated on more than 24 h after the onset of rupture was reported to exceed 50%. The prompt and accurate diagnosis of esophageal rupture is crucial for a subsequent successful treatment, and any delay in diagnosis and therapy remains a major contributor to the attendant mortality. Keywords: Esophagus, perforation, trauma, treatmentTurkiye Klinikleri J Surg Med Sci 2007, 3(47):29-37
